RFID Technology in Warehouse Management & Logistics

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is transforming warehouse and logistics operations by enabling real-time tracking of inventory, assets, and shipments without manual scanning or line-of-sight. From goods-in to dispatch, RFID provides automated visibility at every stage of the supply chain.

Eccel Technology designs and manufactures embedded RFID tags, labels, and reader modules engineered for demanding warehouse environments. Our components can be integrated directly into conveyor systems, handheld scanners, dock doors, and pallet-level tracking setups reducing R&D time and accelerating deployment for OEMs and system integrators.

Warehouse with RFID technology

Why Warehouses Need RFID

Traditional barcode systems require line-of-sight and manual scanning, creating bottlenecks across receiving, storage, picking, and dispatch. RFID eliminates these limitations.

+

Slow manual counts
Barcode-based stock takes are labour-intensive and error-prone, pulling staff away from productive tasks for hours or days.

+

Inventory inaccuracy
Misplaced stock, phantom inventory, and discrepancies between systems lead to stockouts, overstocking, and delayed orders.

+

Shipping errors
Incorrect picks and mislabelled shipments increase returns, damage customer relationships, and add cost.

+

Limited supply chain visibility
Without real-time data, warehouse managers cannot track assets, shipments, or returnable transport items across the supply chain.

RFID Applications in Warehousing & Logistics

From the loading dock to the last mile, RFID integrates into every stage of warehouse and logistics workflows.

GOODS RECEIVING & INBOUND
RFID-tagged pallets and cartons are read automatically as they pass through dock doors — eliminating manual check-in, reducing errors, and speeding up receiving by up to 90%.

INVENTORY & STOCK MANAGEMENT
Conduct full warehouse stock takes in minutes instead of days. RFID reads multiple items simultaneously without opening boxes or moving pallets, providing real-time inventory accuracy.

ORDER PICKING & PACKING
Verify picks automatically at pack stations. RFID ensures the right items go into the right shipment, reducing mispicks and returns while increasing throughput.

SHIPPING & DISPATCH VERIFICATION
Automatically verify outbound shipments against orders as they pass through RFID-enabled dock doors or portals. Catch errors before they leave the building.

ASSET & RTI TRACKING
Track returnable transport items (pallets, roll cages, tote boxes), forklifts, and other warehouse assets. Reduce losses and optimise asset utilisation across multiple sites.

COLD CHAIN & CONDITION MONITORING
Some specialist RFID tags can measure parameters such as temperature, humidity, shock during storage and transit. Automated logging ensures regulatory compliance for food, pharmaceuticals, and sensitive goods.

How RFID Works in a Warehouse

RFID uses radio waves to communicate between tags and readers — no line-of-sight or manual scanning required.

Unlike barcodes, RFID does not require line-of-sight. Tags can be read through packaging, from a distance, and multiple tags can be scanned simultaneously. This makes RFID dramatically faster and more reliable for warehouse operations.

Tags

RFID tags are attached to items, pallets, containers, or assets. Each tag contains a microchip with a unique identifier and an antenna that transmits data to nearby readers. Tags can be self-adhesive labels, rugged encased units, or embedded into packaging.

Readers

Fixed readers are installed at dock doors, conveyor lines, and portals to automatically read tags as items pass through. Handheld readers allow staff to perform mobile stock takes and locate specific items.

Software

Tag data is passed to your warehouse management system (WMS) or ERP, providing real-time visibility of stock levels, locations, and movement throughout the facility.

1

Goods arrive
shipments pass through RFID-enabled dock doors and are automatically logged into the WMS.

2

Put-away & storage
Tagged items are tracked to specific locations. Real-time inventory is updated automatically.

3

Picking & packing
Orders are verified at pack stations via RFID, catching mispicks before shipment.

4

Dispatch
Outbound shipments are validated against orders as they pass through exit portals. Errors are flagged instantly.

5

In transit
Tags continue to provide traceability across the supply chain, from warehouse to customer.

Benefits of RFID in Warehouse & Logistics

RFID delivers measurable improvements across speed, accuracy, labour, and cost.

Real-Time Inventory Accuracy
Eliminate phantom stock and discrepancies. RFID provides a live view of every item in the warehouse, accurate to location level.

Full Supply Chain Traceability
Track goods from supplier to customer. Maintain chain of custody for compliance, recalls, and quality assurance.

Faster Receiving & Dispatch
Read entire pallets in seconds as they pass through dock doors. No manual scanning of individual barcodes.

Better Space Utilisation
Accurate location data enables smarter slotting, improved put-away strategies, and reduced wasted space.

Reduced Labour Costs
Automate stock counts, receiving, and verification processes. Free staff for higher-value tasks.

Reduced Asset Loss
Track RTIs, tools, and equipment across multiple sites. Know exactly where every asset is and when it was last seen.

Fewer Shipping Errors
Automated verification at dispatch eliminates mispicks and mislabelled shipments before they leave the warehouse.

Ready for WMS Integration
RFID data can be integrated into your warehouse management system or ERP to enable automated decision-making and reporting.
