1. Do these readers have CE and FCC certification?
Yes, all our RFID readers and modules are tested and certified to meet CE standards. The latest readers from the Pepper C1 family have some family members with full modular FCC approval certification too.
2. How are embedded modules integrated?
Our modules can be easily integrated into your hardware via UART, USB, Ethernet, RS232, RS485, SPI or I2C interfaces. There are also many wireless protocols available in the Pepper C1 family like TCP Server, TCP Client, REST API, MQTT, Web Socket and BR/EDR + LE
3. What is the typical read range and what does the reading range depend on?
LF (125 kHz) readers typically have a range of several centimeters. For HF (13.56 MHz) readers, the typical reading range for the B1 series readers is a maximum of 7 cm. For C1 series readers, it's a maximum of 12 cm, and for C2 series readers, it can reach up to 20 cm. For our UHF reader, the reading range is up to 15m. The read range is influenced by the antenna size, tag type and orientation, reader power output, environmental conditions, and surrounding materials such as metal or liquid.
4. What hardware interfaces are available?
Depending on the model, readers offer interfaces such as USB, serial UART (TTL), RS232, RS485, Wiegand, Ethernet, SPI, or I²C for flexible system integration.
5. What reader should I select for my project?
Here's a quick guide to choosing the right reader family. You need to answer a few basic questions: What reading range do I need? Less than 10 cm – all will work. Above 10 cm – Pepper C1 or Pepper C2, up to 20cm – Pepper C2. Do I need wireless connectivity? Yes – Pepper C1. No – all, including Pepper C1. Do I need to detect tags some distance away the reader's mounting location? Yes – look for readers with the EA (External Antenna) suffix or 1 of our PCBA mounting modules . No – all will work. Do I need multiple active zones for reading tags? Yes – choose Pepper C1 MUX. Do I need low power consumption? Choose RFID B1 module, Pepper C1 module, or Pepper C2 module – these are SMT versions of standard readers.
6. Can multiple tags be read simultaneously?
Yes, depending on the model and tag type, our readers can perform anti-collision operations to identify multiple tags at once. How many? Up to 15 tags in case of small ICODE tags, the limiting factor is enough emitted power to power up multiple tags.
7. Do the modules support custom firmware or commands?
All modules have a fixed command set, but we provide custom firmware development upon request.

RFID readers for OEM integration

Off-the-shelf hardware frequently fails in complex industrial applications, where a generic RFID reader often demands bulky enclosures and inefficient engineering workarounds. Designing your system around a custom modul RFID or NFC reader grants OEMs superior design flexibility, reduced footprints, and exact interface compatibility such as USB or RS-232, tailored specifically to the existing host system. By removing the necessity for extensive in-house RF redesigns and over-specified RFID readers, these targeted devices shrink the R&D timeline. Eccel's dedicated engineering support mitigates initial development risks and accelerates overall time-to-market, establishing a much faster route to commercial profitability and maximizing ROI.

Adapting your RFID reader external antenna to harsh environments

Industrial manufacturing spaces frequently present severe challenges for wireless data capture, especially when NFC cards or Transponders are deployed near metal surfaces or heavy machinery. Standard equipment, including an off-the-shelf RFID tag reader, often suffers from signal absorption, reflection, and detuning, directly compromising performance and data flow. By focusing on practical physical adjustments rather than altering the internal chip architecture, engineers can successfully integrate a complete RFID reader and antenna into highly demanding environments.

The Physics of Antenna Tuning

When a Tag is positioned in close proximity to metal, the resulting parasitic capacitance and eddy currents shift the resonant frequency of the Device. This detuning causes severe impedance mismatches, meaning the signal from the RFID antenna reader is reflected rather than efficiently transferred. To resolve this, precise antenna tuning adjusts the electrical properties of the hardware to match its specific industrial surroundings.

By correcting the matching circuit and modifying the geometry of the antenna RFID reader, the equipment is precisely calibrated back to its required operating frequency. This physics-based adjustment restores maximum power transfer to the Transponder, mitigating the signal attenuation and dead zones typically induced by metallic reflection.

Managing electromagnetic interference

High levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI) in industrial manufacturing can critically disrupt communication between the host system and the Tag. Managing this ambient noise requires targeted physical modifications to the equipment setup, including the strategic application of customized packaging for the RFID chip reader. Enclosing sensitive components in specifically engineered conductive and wave-absorbing materials creates a Faraday cage effect, which reflects or absorbs external interfering signals.

Alongside specialized packaging, engineers employ ferrite materials and directional alignments to cleanly isolate the signal. Shielding the hardware with ferrite beads suppresses high-frequency noise, while adjusting the physical installation angle prevents multipath interference. These practical physical adaptations guarantee that the Device correctly isolates the intended Tag data without cross-reading surrounding industrial noise.

Streamlining Compliance with full modular approval

Navigating the regulatory landscape for wireless emissions can present significant hurdles and costly delays for OEM product developers. Integrating a pre-certified RFID reader module with robust compliance ensures your final product reaches the market without encountering unnecessary regulatory roadblocks.

  1. Full Modular Approval: Our modules carry Full Modular Approval across FCC, CE, ISED, and UK standards. This means the RF compliance is fully contained within the module itself, allowing technical teams to integrate the hardware with confidence, knowing the core component already meets strict global demands.
  2. Simplified RF Testing: Utilizing pre-approved modules significantly reduces the complexity and risk associated with RF emissions testing for the final host system. By leveraging our certifications, developers can often bypass the most rigorous testing cycles, removing unpredictable delays from the engineering timeline.
  3. Reduced R&D Expenditure: Eliminating the need for extensive external testing laboratories and certification consultants drastically lowers the financial burden of the development phase. This direct reduction in upfront engineering costs, supported by Eccel’s technical documentation, minimizes the total investment required before launch.
  4. Accelerated Time-to-Market: By streamlining compliance and removing certification bottlenecks, OEMs can deploy their systems significantly faster. This accelerated timeline directly leads to a faster path to profitability and a maximized overall ROI.

Choosing the Right RFID Architecture

Securing your production against component obsolescence

One of the most significant threats to long-term manufacturing stability is the sudden discontinuation of critical integrated components by third-party suppliers. Relying on an engineering partner like Eccel, equipped with fully automated in-house manufacturing capabilities, establishes a permanent safeguard against unexpected supply chain disruptions. By maintaining absolute control over the production lifecycle and delivering dedicated engineering support, this approach guarantees the continuous availability of specialized Tags and hardware. This proactive protection strategy ensures seamless ongoing support, prevents highly expensive redesigns caused by obsolete parts, and secures the long-term commercial viability and ROI of the entire production line.
